I haven’t been a fan of Facebook fan pages because there are just too many of them, as many recipients of the “suggest you become a fan, too” invitation can attest. So although we make it a policy not to solicit our friends to become fans, we would like have participation in the projects we’re doing at Domus Consulting Group.
CoPress (h/t David Cohn) suggests Facebook Fan Box as a good opt-in solution to promoting Facebook pages. The Facebook Fan Page for our company is on the right sidebar. I like the fact that it’s more interactive than the Google / Facebook Connect widgets that act like a contacts database because “fans” also opt-in to our status updates, which we’re using like a “closed circuit” Twitter feed. The social utility of Facebook over Twitter is a more focused listener.
It’s easy to add the Fan Box:

{ 1 trackback }
{ 3 comments… read them below or add one }
We added the fan box widget to our sites a couple of weeks ago and have experienced an increase in the pace of our fan base growth. The widget itself is very socially inviting. I highly agree with your recommendation!
Susan, Breaking Napa Valley News looks great!… we’ll showcase it as a prototype for Breaking News.
Thanks for pointing this new feature out. It’s nice but I wish it had an option to hide profile photo. Most profile photos don’t look great in their super shrunken down version. It doesn’t add anything aesthetically to the widget at that point and just takes up space.
